How many years have you worked in the learning/development realm?
20+ years

How did you first get into the learning and development world?
Way back in 1985 when I was a Senior in high school, I was in charge of our school-wide assemblies. I set the curriculum for the year, brought in guest speakers, and facilitated important conversations among students and teachers. Little did I know that decades later, after majoring in French and then playing various roles in operations and human resources, I would end up back in my happy place again – the wonderful world of learning and development!

What’s a favorite quote that gives you inspiration and keeps you going?
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” - Oprah Winfrey

Programs
(2017- Present)

What is your “Real” job position?
Sr Instructional Designer at IDEXX Laboratories

How did you get involved in the VT ATD Chapter?

I attended a SIG on Gamification in 2017 and loved meeting other learning professionals and sharing ideas. Shortly after, I joined the board and have since facilitated a few SIGs on instructional design and training delivery topics.

How did you first get into the learning and development world?I worked for Starbucks for 8 years after college, where they have a strong learning culture. After taking on the role of learning coach, my favorite part of the job became helping other employees learn the art of making perfect foam, how to knock out 25 drinks in less than 5 minutes, or how to deescalate a challenging customer situation. It prompted me to pursue a masters in Organizational Learning and Development, which has allowed me to work for innovative companies like SumTotal and Dealer.com/Cox Automotive. Now I just make lattes in my kitchen and fully focus on creating learning experiences that help people improve their engagement and effectiveness in their jobs.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone just entering this line of work?
Grow your learning toolkit – get as much exposure to different training and delivery techniques as possible. Take free or cheap online courses, look for example eLearning courses and templates, research games and activities, and attend in-person lectures, seminars or even presentations at your own company. When you have a diverse set of ideas of what learning can look like, and you develop the skills to build them out, you can approach each learning/training opportunity with a focus on what’s best for your audience. If developing online tutorials is all you are comfortable with, each problem might look like it could be solved with an eLearning. However, if you’ve been exposed to things like gamification, videos, microlearning, interactive webinars, virtual and augmented reality experiences, social learning, etc. the sky’s the limit.

Where can we find you when you're not working?
Likely on a trail with my boyfriend and our dogs. We love finding local, less traveled places to explore but are also working on the NH 48. If there is a stream, a swim hole, a view, or just some crazy shaped boulders, we’re in.

I accomplish this through campus advocacy and connecting them to University resources. I assist Associate Deans with faculty trainings around amplifying international student experiences and voices in the classroom, curriculum development, and cultural competency trainings. I also serve on Staff Council for the Personal and Professional Development Committee.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just entering this line of work?
Leverage your resources and don't be afraid to ask questions.

My professional career has always centered around empowering individuals through experiential learning either through Outdoor Education or Higher Education.
